Master Program in Hydrography – M.Sc.
Four-Semester Master of Science Program
at the University of Applied Sciences
in Hamburg, Germany
Overview
Since 1985 the University of Applied Sciences Department of Geomatics has offered training specializing in
land survey technology and hydrography. In the late 1990s, the entire curriculum was revised. As a result,
the Department now offers a two-year postgraduate program leading to a certification as a Master of
Science in Hydrography.
The hydrography program was examined 1990 und 2001 by the International Advisory Board of the
International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), and
accredited according to the “Standards of Competence of Hydrographic Surveyors” at Category A (highest
level).
The Need of Hydrography
The IHO has identified that safety of navigation is one of its fundamental goals. Safe navigation can only be
achieved if National Hydrographic Offices and related administrative authorities employ hydrographers with a
high level of competence both in hydrographic surveying and nautical charting. Up-to-date sensor
technology and data processing methods have to be applied. An effective data management is essential.
Modern methods of nautical charting also contribute directly to the protection of marine ecosystems through
a reduction in ship groundings and maritime accidents. Furthermore, the hydrographic database provides
important components for marine pollution detection, coastal zone management as well as sensitive
ecosystem identification and monitoring.
Job Perspectives
As indicated in the previous section, positions in the public sector are typically available in national
hydrographic offices and port authorities.
Job opportunities in the private sector include: port and project surveys, surveys for marine exploration and
mining, pipeline construction and investigation, offshore dredging, offshore constructions (e.g. windmill
parks for offshore power generation), sensor and software technology, remote sensing, three-dimensional
positioning and special navigation, geographical information systems (GIS) and electronic nautical charting,
marine environment technology, marine geodesy and geophysics, such as seismic, magnetic, and gravimetric
exploration.
The Hydrography Program
As such, the Hydrography program provides a comprehensive and broad-based knowledge in all aspects of
the theory and practice of hydrography and allied disciplines for individuals who will practise analytical
reasoning, decision making, and development of solutions to non-routine problems.
The course is organized in compulsory modules. Practice and field exercises are integrated in the curriculum.
Further, there is a three-week supervised field training. The course language is English.
There are final examinations (oral and/or written) for every subject at the end of each semester. Modules are
credited according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
Required Entry Qualification Profile
Academic
: Bachelor’s degree in hydrography, geomatics, or a related field. A good score on the Bachelor’s
examination is required. Applicants whose university qualification is from a country outside of the European
Union (EU) have to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test. Our institution code is 7031.
Language
: Foreign applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of their language
ability. The following certificates are accepted: TOEFL (550/220) institution code 8226, IELTS (Band 6),
Cambridge Certificate (CAE, CPE).
Application Deadline:
Applications will be accepted between December 1 and January 15 for Non-EU
applicants, and between June 1 and July 15 for EU applicants. At present there are 12 places per year. If
these 12 slots are not filled, applications will be accepted up to the beginning of the program, which is
beginning of October each year. .
Enrollment Fee:
Each semester students are required to pay a semester contribution (at present € 230 per
semester). This includes the costs for the »semester ticket«, a ticket that permits free travel on Hamburg's
public transport system.
Cost of Living:
Hamburg is a relatively expensive city. Students should therefore be prepared to have at
least € 500 per month available for accommodation, living, health insurance, books and miscellaneous
expenses.
Program Structure
The programme is organized in two years (four semesters). The following provides an overview of the course
contents.
